Tourism Sign Language Dictionary

A person must have sufficient vocabulary to be able to express himself, learn new information, produce, and communicate through language, both in his mother tongue and in a foreign language he learned later. For this reason, the basis of language education and training studies is mainly based on the goal of increasing the vocabulary of individuals to a sufficient level. Especially foreign language teaching studies cannot progress until the learner learner becomes sufficient in terms of vocabulary (M. Raşit MEMİŞ / 2018). This is true and valid in sign languages.
The main purpose of language teaching is to enable the individual to use the target language effectively in basic language skills. In order to make this possible, understanding skills should be developed in the target language first. The development of comprehension skills is a prerequisite for learning and progress in other skills. The education program of our project at A1-A2 level and the training materials to be prepared in accordance with this program are aimed at creating the comprehension skills of the users in sign language.
In order to improve comprehension skills, it is necessary to have words that provide meaning input. As a member of the Izmir Tour Guides Chamber, which has been guiding tourism for many years, our general belief is that; If you have vocabulary, you can contact a tourist without your grammar knowledge. However, if you do not have vocabulary, there is nothing you can do professionally. At the point of importance of vocabulary in foreign language teaching, all linguists are both ideas.
The final intellectual output of our project will be a professional tourism guides who want to learn the sign language of different countries and a tourism-oriented sign language dictionary for other target people. This dictionary is the last and complementary of the parts that complete our sign language teaching platform.
Language learners can try to deduce the meaning of the word based on their contextual clues and the general context of the text when they have sufficient vocabulary and develop their understanding skills adequately.
The effects of intellectual output on the target audience are as follows.
Although there are similar studies as a result of our research, a tourism-oriented sign language dictionary has not been found. For this reason, the dictionary we will prepare will be an innovative study. It can be used in different areas, complementary to previous studies and may be a source for new studies.

- Words chosen for word teaching should be words that are frequently encountered in different contexts. Words with a low frequency of use are doomed to be forgotten after a while. The 1,000 most frequently used sign intensity will be added to our dictionary,
- Giving and teaching words by associating them with visuals makes teaching more effective, more fun and learning words permanently. Visual elements will be added for the signs in our dictionary.
