2.3. Linguistic Information/Bilingual Education for the hearing impaired
A UK bilingual educational approach gives deaf children the opportunity to learn sign language and spoken/written languages and grants them access to the curriculum in whichever language is most accessible to them in an environment that values deafness, sign language and deaf culture (Swanwick 2010). Sign bilingual education in the UK, uses BSL and English. The terms used to describe deaf children reflect linguistic and cultural preferences. Sweden was the first country to put bilingual education of the deaf into practice in 1980 with a standardised curriculum that was used for the education of the deaf (Davies 1991, Svartholm 1993). |

Among the deaf society, the sign language that is naturally used by the deaf child is regarded as the first language of the child and literacy is taught as a second language.
